Fascination, charm, history, nightlife and much more – City Break in Prague, Czech Republic

Its name in Czech language is Praha, so don’t think you arrived somewhere else. it is the capital and the largest city in Czech Republic, and a perfect place for a city break but also a place you can consider as a home if you are a digital nomad and want to be both productive and live a poetic lifestyle.

So, if you already started planning your arrival, departure, or day trips, it has an international airport Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) situated about 17 km west of the city center, and there are also train stations if you are arriving from somewhere in Europe. Main train station (Hlavní Nádraží), Praha Holešovice, in North of Prague. Both are connected to Metro Line C.

The official currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). Allthough in EU, the country has not yet decided to use Euro officially. Keep in mind: 1 Euro ~ 25 CZK, so have at least 70 Euro worth of Czk in cash (~1700 czk).

What to see and do:

  • Prague Castle: Built in 870 AD, it is the largest ancient castle complex in the world. Includes St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane, and Old Royal Palace
  • Charles Bridge: Built in 1357, this iconic stone bridge over the Vltava River connects Old Town with the Castle District, lined with statues and street performers.
  • Old Town Square: The historic heart of Prague, featuring the Astronomical Clock (installed in 1410!). It hosts Christmas and Easter markets.
  • Lennon Wall A colorful tribute to John Lennon and peace. Constantly evolving with street art and graffiti
  • Letná Park Offers views of the city skyline. Great for a sunset beer or picnic
  • National Theatre an architectural marvel and a symbol of national pride with stunning neo-Renaissance architecture
  • Petřín Hill & Lookout Tower inspired by the Eiffel Tower and offers panoramic views. It is surrounded by gardens and a mirror maze.
  • Vyšehrad Fortress it is one of the many historically rich landmarks, there is a peaceful park, and offers views over the Vltava River
  • Visit the Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague and explore hidden chambers and the reconstructed lab of Edward Kelley, a real 16th-century alchemist.
  • Prague is one of the only cities with Cubist buildings (Cubist Architecture), including the House of the Black Madonna
  • Grébovka Park (Havlíčkovy Sady) gather here with the locals for wine tastings with spectacular views
    If you don’t like wine, or just prefer beer, Czech beer is legendary—and cheap. Try a Pilsner Urquell or visit a beer spa (apparently that’s a thing).

Traditional Czech Dishes

  • Svíčková na smetaně – Marinated beef sirloin served with a creamy vegetable sauce, cranberry garnish, and fluffy bread dumplings.
  • Vepřo knedlo zelo – Roast pork with sauerkraut and dumplings—one of the most beloved in the country.
  • Guláš (Goulash) A thick beef stew spiced with paprika, often served with bread or potato dumplings.
  • Chlebíčky Open-faced sandwiches topped with meats, cheeses, eggs, and pickles. Lunch but also a snack.
  • Smažený sýr – Fried cheese, served with tartar sauce and fries.
  • Kulajda – A creamy mushroom and dill soup with potatoes and poached egg.
  • Trdelník – sweet chimney cake rolled in sugar and nuts is fun to try fresh off the grill.
  • Česnečka (Garlic Soup) Known as the “hangover cure”, useful after the next section (drinks)

Traditional Czech Drinks

  • Pilsner Beer (Pilsner Urquell, Budvar). The Czech Republic is the birthplace of pilsner. Beer is cheaper than water in many places—and brewed to perfection.
  • Becherovka A herbal liqueur from Karlovy Vary, often served as a digestif. Think of it as Czech Jägermeister, but smoother.
  • Slivovice (Slivovitz) – A potent plum brandy from Moravia.
  • Kofola – A Czech cola alternative with herbal notes.
  • Mulled Wine (Svařák) Especially in winter, you’ll find this spiced red wine at Christmas markets and cozy cafés.
